Studio Ghibli's films share a visual identity that has held remarkably steady from Castle in the Sky (1986) through The Boy and the Heron (2023). The look is hand-drawn cel animation over hand-painted watercolor backgrounds. The backgrounds — by Kazuo Oga and his successors — are the unsung half of the style. They sit beneath simple, expressively drawn cel figures and provide most of the atmosphere. Specific traits: a saturated but never harsh palette, with greens and warm earth tones dominant; cumulus clouds drawn with rounded soft forms; food rendered with conspicuous care (rice grains, melting butter); architecture that mixes Japanese, European, and invented elements; characters with simplified features and oversized expressive eyes; weather and wind as active visual elements. Use it for fantasy and slice-of-life scenes, child-led narratives, soft pastoral landscapes, magical interiors, and any image that should feel hopeful, lived-in, and hand-made. Limitations: a request for "Ghibli style" without specifying the film often produces washed-out generic anime backgrounds. Specify the film (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro), the time of day, and "cel animation foreground over watercolor background."
