Description
Webtoon is the Korean-originated vertical-scroll digital comic format that has, since roughly 2015, become the dominant comics format globally by readership. The visual language is shaped by the medium: panels are wide and short, the canvas extends downward indefinitely, and most readers scroll on a phone. Visual rules: clean digital line art (often with the line weight modulating less than in Japanese manga); full color (rare in manga); large emotional close-ups separated by long vertical "negative space" gutters; flat or soft gradient backgrounds rather than detailed environments; characters with K-pop-influenced facial proportions — slimmer faces, smaller mouths, larger softer eyes than 1990s anime, fuller hair; consistent contemporary fashion references. Use it for character-driven scenes, romance, slice-of-life, fantasy with a contemporary tone, fashion-leaning illustration, and anything intended for mobile vertical reading. Limitations: low background detail by default; the look can read as flat if pushed to print. The vertical aspect is part of the style — generative models flatten it into a square unless prompted. Specify "vertical webtoon panel, clean digital line art, K-drama character proportions, full color, flat or soft gradient background."
Three pioneers
Every style in this catalog names three verifiable pioneers. This is the part of the drop test that takes the longest to write and is the easiest to spot when it's missing.
-
SIU (Park Yong-Je)
Korean webtoon artist. The God of High School (2011–) was one of the first global breakout webtoons and helped establish the look and pacing conventions of the medium.
-
Carnby Kim & Youngchan Hwang
Creators of Sweet Home (2017–20), which Netflix adapted in 2020. Codified the high-color, high-emotion, episodic vertical-scroll horror grammar.
-
Naver Webtoon platform
Founded in 2004. Naver created the technical and economic infrastructure — daily release cadence, free-to-read with micro-transactions, vertical scroll — that shaped what 'looks like a webtoon.'
Contemporary revival
Solo Leveling's manhwa-to-anime adaptation (2024–) and the broader 'webtoon adaptation' wave from Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Disney
Solo Leveling's anime adaptation (2024) was the most-watched anime of its season globally. Naver Webtoon's parent company went public in 2024 at a $2.6B valuation. Netflix has greenlit over 15 webtoon-adapted live-action series since 2020. #webtoon on TikTok exceeds 30B views.
