Cottagecore is the 2017–present internet aesthetic that romanticizes pre-industrial European rural life. The visual rules are not historically rigorous — it is not strictly Edwardian, not strictly Victorian, not strictly 1940s land-girl — but a soft pastoral composite anchored in specific visual elements: warm muted earth-and-pastel palettes (cream, sage, dusty rose, butter yellow, mossy green); soft natural light, usually golden hour or overcast; flowers and herbs, especially baking-related ones (lavender, rosemary, wildflowers); linen and gingham fabrics; loose hair; hand-baked bread, jars of preserves, butter on butcher block; small animals (chickens, lambs, cats); period-vague rural architecture (thatch roof, white walls, small-paned windows). Use it for lifestyle, food, slow-fashion, slow-living, and any imagery that should evoke quiet, handmade, pre-industrial domesticity. Limitations: not for anything urban, fast, technological, or industrial. The aesthetic is gendered in its source material — pushing against that costs a lot of prompt energy.
